A woman in her 60s has spoken out after she was told she would lose her job if she didn’t take a “shame” test.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said the move to stop people from telling people what they can and cannot eat was aimed at preventing an increase in obesity.
“We want to keep people in jobs,” she said.
“But it’s not only about the jobs.
The problem is that a lot of people who are in jobs don’t want their job to be a job they are ashamed of and who they are not proud of.”
This isn’t about bullying people, it’s about putting pressure on people who work hard to stay in jobs.
“It’s about saying ‘this is the job we’re going to give you, so you have to do this or you will lose your job’.”
This is not a threat but it is a real thing that people are facing in our society.
“We have a number of measures in place to make sure that if someone is told they can’t eat, they can still eat.”
But what we’re really focusing on is making sure that they don’t have to eat.
“Health Minister Joan Burton said the government was taking a new approach to protecting people from eating unhealthy food.”
In the last six months, we’ve introduced new rules to protect people from a range of potentially harmful behaviours, from inappropriate eating, to drinking too much and having an unhealthy relationship with food,” she told the Sunday Independent.”
These are just a few examples of the ways in which we are tackling these problems.
“It is important to note that we are not taking the steps to change behaviour that people find unacceptable, but rather to help people to get healthier and stay fit.”
The minister said the Government was also working to improve the quality of food in our supermarkets and fast food outlets, and that she was aware of a recent campaign to raise awareness about healthy eating.
“I know that we’re working on all these things,” she added.
“What we are doing in the first quarter of next year is working on what we call a new initiative to ensure that we have better health food in stores, and we will continue to work with local authorities and food suppliers to improve food safety.”
The key thing is we are getting people to eat healthy and stay healthy.
